Dear Daddy
by Verlicia A. Ramirez
Story 1008

I remember the butterflies in my stomach as I watched you unscrew the training wheels on my bike, and how I begged, "Don't let go!", as I wobbled and pedaled along the street.  But suddenly, you did, and I kept going.  By the time I had reached the end of our street, you were just a tiny figure, but I could still hear you cheering for me as if I had just flown to the moon.  All my life, you have believed in me, even when I didn't believe in myself.  That's why I love you so much...

I remember being a little girl, asking you how old you were.  You answered, "42", and for many years after that, I thought that was your age.  Then, one day, it begin to dawn on me that life was not standing still for you.  And on each of your birthdays since that time, I wish for my childish understanding about life to come true.  I wish for your time clock to keep ticking on and on...

I remember seeing stars in my eyes whenever I looked at you.  You were my Daddy, my best friend.  Thank you, Dad, for always making me feel loved.  And by the way, I just want you to know...after 29 years, those stars are still there.

Of all the things you grew up to be, I am so glad that one of them was my Dad.

All my love,
Lisa
