Biggest Heart
by Katie Autry
Story 1003

The following story was published in the Californian Newspaper.  Katie Autry of Lake Elsinore won the "Biggest Heart" contest sponsored by the Prime Outlets in Lake Elsinore, California with this story about her Dad.

Having the world’s biggest heart describes my dad to a tee. I know that a lot of kids must feel the same way about their fathers as I feel about mine, but I have proof. Here are just a few examples of how kind and loving a person my dad is.

One Christmas my dad found out that one of his coworkers didn’t have enough money to buy his children presents. He secretly donated gifts, and to this day, they have no idea who the special Santa was. Another time, my dad found out that an old high school buddy, who he hadn’t seen for years, was dying of leukemia and in desperate need of blood donors. He didn’t think twice about taking time off from work to go down to the hospital to donate his blood.

My dad not only helped people he knows and loves, he will also go out of his way to help perfect strangers. My dad’s job requires a lot of driving, and although he has a very busy schedule, he always stops to help stranded motorists on the side of the road. One time when my dad was on his way to work, he spotted an elderly man with a broken-down truck sitting on the side of the road. Of course, he stopped to help him, and lucky he did – the man had been stranded there since the night before.

To me, my dad is a real-life hero. He is constantly encouraging me to be the best person I can be. He coaches me in all my sports and volunteers his time in my classroom. If I ever have a problem, he is always there for me. He teaches me right from wrong and shows me by his example that love and kindness are the most important things in life.

Every night in my prayers, I thank God for the best gift a little girl could ever have – my dad!
